Zana Briski was born in1966 in London, England. She received her MA at the University of Cambridge and studied documentary photography at International Center of Photography, New York, NY. The photographer and documentary filmmaker, she is most notable for her documentary, Born into Brothels, about children in Calcutta’s Red Light District. Her strong belief that art can be life-changing and powerfully transformative for both the artist and the viewer compelled her to found the non-profit organization Kids with Cameras, teaching photography to marginalized children in communities throughout the world. This print is based on a photo of a man leading a camel through the desert towards a mountain range; the photographer is riding the camel. Briski has received numerous awards, including a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship, Dorthea Lange-Paul Taylor Prize, W. Eugene Smith Grant in Humanistic Photography, a Lucie Humanitarian Award, and was the recipient of the Printshop's 2001 Special Editions Residency. Her documentary Born into Brothels received an Emmy and an Oscar.
