Firelei Báez was born in the Dominican Republic and lives and works in New York, NY. She received her MFA from Hunter College and BFA from The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art. Báez's fanciful works reinterpret myths and traditions and present cultural narratives that are both personal and universal. Her subjects vary from Caribbean carnival to gendered notions of landscape. She is the recipient of The Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters and Sculptors Grant, The Jacques and Natasha Gelman Award, and The Bronx Recognizes Its Own Award. Recent exhibitions include El Museo Del Barrio, New York, NY; The Cortona Archeological Museum, Italy; The Caribbean African Diaspora Institute, New York, NY; and The Bronx Museum of the Arts, NY.
