Vito Acconci was born in 1940 in Bronx, NY and lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. He received his MFA from the University of Iowa and BA from the College of the Holy Cross. Beginning his career as a poet, Acconci emerged into a provocative conceptual performance and video artist, using himself as the subject for much of his work. His multi-media installations, sculptural architecture, and design projects are themed around gender, sexuality, narcissism, and controversies of self-image. Solo exhibitions include Sonnabend Gallery, New York, NY; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, IL; Kolnischer Kunstverein, Cologne, Germany; Brooklyn Museum, NY; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY; and The Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY. He is the recipient of awards from the American Academy in Rome; Berlin Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst; the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship; New York State Council on the Arts, and National Endowment for the Arts.
