Fred Wilson was born in 1954 in Bronx, NY and lives and works in New York, NY. He received his BFA from Purchase College, State University of New York. Wilson's installations explore issues of social justice and museum culture. His work confronts racism, stereotypes, humanity, and the distinct limitations of cultural institutions. Rather than creating his own objects, he mostly uses a curatorial approach to create new contexts for objects on display. He is the recipient of The MacArthur Foundation Achievement Award, The Larry Aldrich Foundation Award, and grants from New York Foundation for the Arts, and National Endowment for the Arts. Wilson has exhibited widely and is often invited to re-contextualize museum collections since his groundbreaking exhibition at the Baltimore Historical Society, MD. Wilson was the US representative at both the Cairo Bienniale and Venice Bienniale.
