Philip Taaffe was born in 1955 in Elizabeth, NJ and lives and works in New York, NY and West Cornwall, CT. He received his BFA from the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art. A critical commentary by Roger Lipsey titled "Philip Taaffe: Celebrations" describes Taaffe's art as "a naturally loving response to the beauty and authority of life itself and the transformative powers of the imagination." Made in the style and technique Taaffe explored while in residence at the Printshop in the mid-eighties, this work was originally produced in 1984 and revisited in 2010. Taaffe is widely recognized and has had extensive surveys of his work all over the world, including the Instituto Valencia d'Arte Modern, Spain; Fondazione Galleria Civica di Trento, Italy; Galleria d'Artes Moderna, Italy; and has been included in two Sydney Biennials and three Whitney Biennials. His work is in numerous public collections including Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY; Philadelphia Museum of Art, PA; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, NY; and Museo Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid.
