San Sebastian 4 (Fundación COFF) was taken in San Sebastián, Spain (Basque Country) as part of a project commissioned by Fundación COFF. The poetic whole culminating from this sea of individual figures, which are arranged in a sculptural way, further challenges traditionally held stigmas associated with nudity, privacy and social and political issues surrounding art in the public sphere.
Spencer Tunick was born in Middletown, New York in 1969 and now lives and works in Brooklyn. Tunick has exhibited widely all over the world and is represented by Hales Gallery in London, UK. Tunick is widely celebrated for his elaborately posed installations of multiple nude figures within interestingly select public settings. His temporary site-specific installations have taken place across the globe in cities including Lyon, Melbourne, Mexico City, New York, and Barcelona to name a few. A BBC documentary about Tunick aired following the 7,000-person installation in Barcelona, that holds the world record for largest nude photo shoot. Tunick’s recent installations and exhibitions include the Sagamore Hotel, Miami, Florida; Saatchi Gallery, London; MOCA Cleveland 2004; Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo; the Lyon Biennial; the Havana Biennial; and BALTIC, Newcastle Gateshead.
