William Powhida

Powhida's rendering of himself in the Printshop studio.

The 2008 Benefit Mystery Print is a facsimile and parody of a fictional feature from the magazine Art on Paper. Written for the “How it Was Done” column, the article exposes a scandal at the Printshop concerning the Mystery Print itself. The piece describes how Powhida, in the guise of his artist star “persona,” starts to feel the onslaught of immense pressure to produce for the project, and subsequently self-sabotages the opportunity with the Printshop. Quotes from all the staff are included, revealing how he eventually co-opts and signs his own name on a print edition already made by Michael Schall, 2007 Special Editions resident, with Schall’s consent.
With astute observations on the everyday workings of the Printshop and the collaborative process, the print becomes a relic of a performative action, where the experience and the artwork become one.
